British Land (LSE: BLND) is one of Europe's largest publicly listed real estate and property development companies, focused on retail locations around the UK. Headquartered in London, they own, manage, develop and finance a portfolio of high-quality commercial and residential properties. Total property assets (owned or managed) for British Land in the UK is £13.6 billion, as valued in 2015.

The Challenge

British Land was initially using MacroView to access SharePoint documents on mobile devices. However, employees complained that MacroView was too slow for browsing tree structures in SharePoint. They also experienced difficulties adding and accessing SharePoint documents from Outlook with MacroView.

The company provided employees with the latest BlackBerry devices; MacroView did not support these devices. As such, the company found themselves in need of a standardized, uniform solution for SharePoint access from both Outlook as well as a host of mobile devices.

At this point, British Land decided to look for a records management and knowledge management solution that would encourage SharePoint adoption in Outlook and on mobile devices.

The Solution

British Land was aware of through marketing activities, and became impressed with them through interactions at local SharePoint conferences.

Upon examination, British Land felt that fulfilled both their requirements– it gave them smooth and fast access to SharePoint documents in Outlook via drag and drop and it offered a uniform experience across mobile and desktop on all mobile devices including BlackBerry smartphones.

The Rollout

After a successful initial trial phase, it was decided to replace MacroView with Groups were invited to the IT product service desks to install and to determine whether the employee needed Email and/or Mobile. Because was so easy to use, employees didn’t need real training, so everyone was simply given a brief demo after installation.

The main value of has been the storage savings– plus saving important documents in SharePoint has helped British Land meet records requirements. The ease of use of SharePoint has also been a major benefit for British Land workers.

Future Prospects

The next phase in the rollout will focus on the departments that don’t yet have The company’s IT consultant plans to address additional departments and to verify that is effectively rolled out – in order to help employees use SharePoint effectively.
