The honeymoon is over

Your body releases certain hormones during the so-called ‘honeymoon phase’ of a relationship. The release of dopamine makes you want to spend more time with your new sweetheart, while adrenaline can give you a ‘rush’ and serotonin can make you ‘crazy’ for one another. The problem is, the honeymoon phase is called such because it will eventually fade over time. If, at this time, you and your significant other are still invested and care for one another, this will likely lead to the deeper ‘attachment phase’. If not, the relationship may not survive much longer.

But did you know there is a similar honeymoon phase between your organization and the technology you use? You may feel a similar sense of excitement and anticipation when your company first invests in Office 365. When moving on-premises content into the cloud—like emails in Exchange Online and documents in SharePoint Online—it’s common for companies to experience big savings when they first move to Office 365. The time and effort it can save IT administrators has led Office 365 to become the fastest growing product in Microsoft’s history. However, just like any relationship, this Office 365 honeymoon period can fade—and moving into that long-term attachment phase is far from guaranteed.

A lack of understanding

The main selling point of Office 365 is its ability to improve the productivity of workers through a wide variety of powerful and integrated tools. However, despite this promise, once the honeymoon phase is over, many companies realize there hasn’t been a significant growth in the uptake of Office 365 licenses. Part of this is due to the level of variety: employees are handed seven tools to do a job that only requires two and can quickly get overwhelmed or confused by the amount of choice. This lack of understanding between the platform and the people using it can cause large parts of Office 365 to go unused (unloved) and your investment wasted.

But again, like any relationship, difficulties can be worked out and resolved if you are committed. You need to understand one another’s needs and make compromises for each other.

In the same manner, the ‘default’ setup of your Office 365 environment may not be ideal for the needs of your businesses, even if you don’t realize it at first. Only by taking the time to resolve this problem can you begin to really make the most of the platform.
