Office 2016 for Windows is here [Tweet this]

The hashtag #Office2016 was trending on release day of Microsoft’s latest rendition of the Office suite. Rightly so, the worldwide release on September 22nd got everyone talking. The Office blog has heralded ‘16 as “a milestone in delivering new value for Office 365 subscribers”, providing a focus on collaboration, pairing with Windows 10, and improved security features for businesses. Office 2016 for Mac is also available right from the get-go as a one-time purchase, and Office 365 subscribers can expect to get more frequent and regular updates. It’s a move we might not have predicted the Microsoft of recent years to make, and is a sign of the new direction the technology giant is taking going forwards.

A 2014 study found that on average, an interaction worker spends 28% of their workweek managing email and almost 20% looking for internal information. Adding up to almost 50% of their entire working hours, it’s problem enough to make most managers heads spin. This article gives 8 steps to boost productivity in the workplace so employees don’t spend 2 and a half of their 5 work days writing emails and searching for information.

Centralizing information, intrinsic motivation and embracing the desire to socialize were some of the key pointers. It’s worth noting that the same study found that most companies could double the current value they get from social tools by removing online hierarchies and creating a more open, direct, trusting and engaging environment. 

 

Three steps for CIOs to transition to the digital workplace [Tweet this]

The 2015 edition of Gartner’s renown CIO Survey showed that many organizations were well on their way to transitioning from the era of IT industrialization toward the digital economy. However, there are still some legacy practices that remain. These practices must be either updated or disregarded as to fully embrace the digital workspace and agile operational approach of bimodal IT.

It’s difficult (and not recommended) to ignore Gartner survey results, and this article reviewed the three steps they recommend for a successful transition.

1. Extend IT planning horizons

84% of planning is still based on a two-year horizon. Extending beyond that would enable an IT group to become a better contributor to long-term business success, and would help IT leaders make better investment decisions.

2. Invest in post-nexus technologies

Contrary to some beliefs, the ‘Nexus of Forces’ (mobile, social, cloud and information) have already very much arrived. So, CIOs who want to remain ahead of the curve are now thinking about post-Nexus technologies: the Internet of Things (IoT), thinking machines, 3D printing, robotics and even augmented humans (exciting stuff to say the least).

3. Focus metrics on employee engagement    

The two metrics that are most suited to judging CIO performance are IT cost and service levels. However, focusing instead on metrics based on non-financial value and contribution to innovation can help organizations better understand employee engagement, which has become a high priority to ensure the workforce embraces new business models.

 

How cloud adoption can fuel SMB growth [Tweet this]

Quite the opposite to Gartner, small to midsize businesses (SMBs) face a unique set of challenges. Their challenge is communicating with customers, vendors and employees as effectively as a large business, but with considerably less resources at their disposal. However, cloud computing is making that challenge far less daunting.

Cloud benefits include enhanced security and productivity, as well as improved flexibility to allow workers to get more accomplished with less time.
