From the importance of good (and bad) user experience to cloud migration and the Microsoft Graph, it’s been another eventful and insightful month across the Twitter-verse. Building a digital workplace is far from easy—many businesses have attempted to evolve their technology and practices closer to the digital way of working, only to see them abandoned months later.

Why is this the case?

Paul Zimmerman believes it comes down to user experience. A bad user experience can make collaboration more difficult than it needs to be, leading people to siloed approaches—the same problem the digital workplace looks to remove. But the success of the digital workplace is often measured by how easy it is to find and discover content, how easy it is to connect with colleagues and share ideas. If these things falter, users are likely to simply switch off. And this is why digital transformation efforts can stall, or be left completely abandoned.

The Microsoft Graph is a developer platform that connects and collates content from a range of different information sources to bring it to the user. The platform builds on Office 365 APIs, allowing third-party developers to integrate the platform into their own products working on Windows, Office 365 and Azure.

At harmon.ie, we’ve been able to use the Microsoft Graph with Collage, bringing together machine learning with the wealth of data around user behavior in Office 365.

Within Collage, the Microsoft Graph extracts valuable insights about what matters most to workers. Collage then uses this information to surface the most important updates from every app a worker uses in their day-to-day, meaning they don’t have to toggle between different apps and windows constantly.

Amazon has gone from $15.7m total sales in 1996 to $136 billion total sales in 2016. That’s an increase of over 8000% in just 20 years. And potentially the biggest factor to such a meteoric rise has been the creation of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Amazon engineers realized that virtual infrastructure was required to handle such explosive growth. And the attempt to manage such growth eventually resulted in Amazon Web Services, enabling clients to achieve scale through off-site computing and storage services.

Businesses can do well to learn from AWS, but the move to the cloud is by no means easy. Robert van der Meulen of LeaseWeb details three steps to make the transition easier: have a backup plan, maximize efficiency, and adapt to changes as they arise.

Think of some of the new technologies that have emerged in the last 10 years alone: the iPad, Android, Google Chrome, Uber, Airbnb, Spotify… the list goes on.   1. Artificial Intelligence—knowledge workers must become digital workers, and AI is at the heart of this change.

  3. Agility and Innovation—technology is ushering in change. Businesses will do well to embrace the Internet of Things (IoT) trend and prepare for the new “app culture”.
  4. Remote working—allowing employees greater flexibility and the ability to work from home will be critical to overcoming the challenge of recruitment.

While cloud computing may be a reality for some companies, for others the move to the cloud remains at an early stage. The truth is that just 12% of businesses are cloud-first organizations, explains Clive Longbottom, Service Director at analyst Quocirca:

“You’ve got early movers who are already on cloud—the mainstream organizations know it’s the future. At the same time, you still have the laggards that are happy to run legacy technology in-house. But flexibility and agility is the key going forwards and executives need to embrace the cloud.”
